Great Barrington Fire Department hopes to stoke interest with open house
GREAT BARRINGTON>> The Great Barrington Fire Department is welcoming the public to the town fire station for an open house on Saturday morning.
"This is the first event of its kind," said Fire Chief Charles Burger. "We're hoping to turn it into an annual event."
The event will feature demonstrations of the work the fire department does. In addition to specifically fire-related actions, like hose handling and roof venting, the department will also show how it helps with emergencies like vehicle extrications after accidents.
It's all part of a push for new recruits, Burger said, noting the department needs more volunteers.
"We think being a firefighter is the best thing out there," he said. "And the best way to prove that is to show the public what we do."
The event isn't just for adults, though. There will be activities for all ages, Burger said.
The Fire Department works with the local elementary school twice a year on its Fire Prevention and Safety Days. The two days allow the department to show youngsters how to be safe in the case of an emergency.
The event also helps to instill a love of firefighting from a young age.
"That's what happened for me," Burger said.
