Great Barrington reaches the finals in District 1 Little League tourney

ADAMS -- Great Barrington has reached the championship game of the Don Gleason District 1 11-12 Little League Tournament.

Great Barrington’s Noah Helmke took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth and finished up with a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Pittsfield South. Helmke outpitched Zack Bernardo, who gave up two runs in the first inning, and shut Great Barrington down the rest of the way.

South has to come back today to play Dalton-Hinsdale in the Elimination bracket. The winner of today’s game needs to beat Great Barrington twice to claim the District crown.

Helmke lost his no-hitter when Leo Arace reached on an infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Nikos Cassivant had two singles for Great Barrington, while Helmke and Curt Wilton had the other hits.

In the other game on Wednesday, Dalton-Hinsdale eliminated Don Gleason Pittsfield North 11-1. Winning pitcher Brandon Roughly helped his own cause by hitting a two-run home run in the first inning. Teammate Gabe Davis followed with a solo homer.

Kevin Huban and Auggie Roughly each had two hits for Dalton-Hinsdale and Gabe Verdi had a single and an RBI. For Pittsfield North, Ryan Lapierre had two singles, Jake Harrington had a double and an RBI while Cole Wojtkowski had a single.

District 1 10-11 tournament

NORTH ADAMS -- Don Gleason Pittsfield North outlasted Great Barrington 15-11 in pool play.

Mike Zwingelstein had the big bat for North, with a three-run home run and a single. Jonathon Monahan and Jayheem Solomon each had a single and a double, Kyle McDonald and Steve Zuccalto had two singles each while Parker Winters doubled.

For Great Barrington, Colby Blue had three hits, Jake Lupiani had two hits, while Sam Jaffe, Aiden Aloisi and Ben Shultis had one hit each.

Babe Ruth 13-year olds

WESTFIELD -- Pitcher Joe Cracolici helped lead the Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars to a 14-2 win over Holden in the opening round of the Western Mass. State Tournament.

Cracolici pitched four innings of one-hit ball, striking out four. Cedric Rose had two hits and scored two runs. Ian Benoit had a double, a RBI and three runs scored. Ryan Gaudette had a double, a stolen base and two. RBI

Pittsfield awaits the winner of the game between Westfield and North End. That game will at 8 p.m. today in Westfield.
