Greylock golf holds off Lenox
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Consistency was the theme of the day for Mount Greylock's Matt Wiseman and Kyle Alvarez.
The Mounties' Nos. 1 and 2 golfers, respectively, carded 6-over-par 42s to lead the Greylock golf team past Lenox, 177-192 on the front nine at Waubeeka Golf Links on Monday afternoon.
Lenox's Kris Vahle earned medalist honors with a 40.
"We'll take that any day," Wiseman said before all the scores were in.
Wiseman, a sophomore, and Alvarez, a freshman, won't out-hit too many other 1s and 2s, but they will likely play cleaner. They did just that Monday.
The duo routinely found the fairway off the tee, placing themselves in good position for their approach shots, which were just as clean for the most part.
When they did find themselves in trouble off the tee -- like Wiseman did on the par-5 fourth hole and Alvarez did on the par-4 ninth -- they recovered quickly and put themselves in position to salvage par or bogey.
"It's very important, and I always play better when I hit fairways," Wiseman said. "I hit a fair number of fairways today, and the ones I didn't hit, I got out of trouble well."
The duo's short game -- chipping and putting -- carried them most of the day.
Wiseman wasn't happy with his putting on the first two holes, which he bogeyed, but he made a nice par putt on the par-3 seventh from about seven feet. As for his chipping, he rolled the ball just by the hole on a couple of occasions.
"They're putting and chipping and that's what golf is -- putting and chipping," Greylock (3-5) coach Luke Polidoro said. "They're not making any bad mistakes. We've been working on golf course management all year, and for young golfers, that's the most important thing. They have the short game. They play a lot, so when they're on, they can chip and putt."
LENOX (192) -- Kris Vahle 40, Cam Sibley 52, Ben Epstein 51, Zach Levesque 57, Lucy Schwartz 52, Kevin Coakley 49.
