Greylock wrestling holds off visiting Taconic, 41-39

WILLIAMSTOWN -- This has been a frustrating year for Matt Chamberlain and his Taconic wrestling team.

For the second time this season, the Braves outwrestled an opponent, only to lose by two points. In this case, Mount Greylock edged the visitors, 41-39.

Earlier this year, Taconic was beaten by Monument Mountain, 33-31, despite pinning seven Spartans.

On Thursday night, the Braves were missing wrestlers at the first three weights. This forced them to forfeit their matches at 106, 113 and 120. Taconic was in an 18-0 hole to start off.

Taconic then got pins from Nick Bailey at 126, Dylan Sickell at 145, Gabe Gash at 152, Austin Houghtaling at 182, Josh Broskey at 195 and Ivan Gonzales at 285.

In addition, David Jones won a decision at 220. But the effort fell just short.

"We were missing some guys in the first three weights, and it cost us," said Chamberlain. "You just can't rally from 18 down against Greylock. One mistake and you're dead."

Chamberlain would not use the forfeits as an excuse.

"You can't say we would have won [if the Braves had had wrestlers at those weights]," he said. "You don't know what would have happened."

Greylock coach Raymond Miro was ill Thursday night, and his assistant coaches had to take over.

"It was a tough match," said Greylock assistant John Carvalho. "We were fortunate to get those forfeits early."

Greylock got pins from Travis Hilchey at 132, Dave O'Brien at 160 and Johnny Colon at 170. In addition, Devin Pelletier at 138 won a major decision.

Hilchey's win on Thursday kept him undefeated for the year at 27-0.

"It feels pretty good," he said of his win. "I'd like to keep it going. We have a big one this weekend [at the Essex, Vt., Invitational]. That will be a challenge."

O'Brien also picked up a key win on Friday, pinning Tyler Klose in 3:30.

"He's good," said O'Brien of Klose. "He's tough. We know each other rpetty well. I've been wrestling him for years."

The Braves were down, 41-18 with four matches to go. Houghtaling scored a pin at 182 over Greylock's Maurice Nentzow, and Broskey pinned Alex Lopes with 16 seconds to go in their match at 195.

But the Braves fell short as David Jones scored a solid 9-6 win over Hunter Abriel at 220 that put Taconic down by eight, 41-33. A pin would have made the final match of the night interesting, as the visitors would have been down only 41-36. Gonzales' pin at 285 only got the Braves close.
