Gun replica found on Taconic High School grounds
PITTSFIELD — Criminal charges may be coming after city police discovered a replica handgun hidden behind Taconic High School on Thursday.
According to a statement released by Pittsfield Police on Friday, the investigation began after police received a report on Oct. 31 that a student was seen with a handgun.
The student, whom police did not identify, was contacted later that day and searched, with no weapon found. The student denied having a firearm.
On Wednesday, police received more information supporting the claim of a weapon in the building and authorities reviewed school surveillance video and interviewed additional witnesses.
On Thursday, based on the video and witness statements, Taconic's School Resource Officer, requested assistance from Pittsfield Police's K-9 unit to conduct a search behind the school.
That search recovered a hidden realistic-looking air-powered pellet pistol, police said.
Police said Friday the investigation is open and ongoing, and additional administrative action may be taken by the School District in addition to whatever criminal charges may be pending.
