High school football, volleyball and golf roundup: PHS football blows out Ludlow
LUDLOW >> The Pittsfield football team won its second consecutive game to open the season with a 42-8 victory over Ludlow.
Edwin Rodriguez and Tyrell Boire each scored twice for the Generals (2-0) while Trevon Taylor and Griff Manns also scored.
Pittsfield led 22-0 at halftime. Shawn Morgan recorded 17 tackles.
"The boys did a good job," Pittsfield coach Brian Jezewski said. "Our guys did a very good job of fighting, it was a tough game. 1-0 after this week, we'll be 0-0 again on Monday and we'll get back to work."
Pittsfield hosts Woodstock (Conn.) on Friday night.
Palmer 35, Lee 20
Lee >> Lee hung around with Palmer through 43 minutes of action on Friday, but a late score by Palmer quarterback Ryan McCarthy inside of the final minute put the game away.
Lee, which led 8-7 in the first quarter and 14-7 in the second, closed the gap to 28-20 in the fourth when Homer Winston connected with Ryan Ruef for a touchdown pass, but the Wildcats could not recover the ensuing onside kick and Palmer went on to add the insurance score.
"This was as good a football team as we'll play all season," Lee coach Keith Thomson said. "We did a good job executing our gameplan, but unfortunately [Palmer quarterback Ryan McCarthy] made a lot of plays with his feet."
McCarthy was everywhere on offense for Palmer, rushing for four touchdowns and tossing a fifth. He also kicked, and made, all five point-after tries.
Lee took an early lead when Lukas Loehr took a carry to the barn, and then Ruef dialed up the trickery and hit Mike Hurley on a reverse pass to put Lee up again.
McCarthy, though, was not to be stopped on the night.
"I thought our kids played hard, thought they played well for four quarters," Thomson said. "They just made more plays."
