High school golf and cross-country roundup: Taconic golf tops Mount Greylock by one stroke


WILLIAMSTOWN — A single stroke is all that separated Taconic and Mount Greylock on Tuesday, as the Braves edged the Mounties 172-173 at Waubeeka Golf Links.

Mount Greylock's Kyle Alvarez was the medalist with a 38 on the day. With Alvarez recording a two-shot advantage over Taconic No. 1 Mike Kays, and Taconic's No. 4 Connor Champoux recording a two-shot edge on Bennett Zimmerman, it was Taconic's Tim Curry (44) besting Greylock's Hunter Sarkis (45) that swung the match.

Taconic improves to 4-0 on the year, with a 1-0 record in the Berkshire North. The loss was Greylock's first of the season, and drops the Mounties to 3-1, 2-1.

PITTSFIELD >> Visiting Lenox left Pontoosuc Lake Country Club with a win on Tuesday.

The hosts actually had the medalist on the day, as St. Joseph's Michael Gingras shot a 40, but it was the Millionaires that recorded the lowest team score. Matthew Shields shot a 42 for the Millionaires, and Ricky Armstrong shot a 44.

St. Joe coach Fran Brilliant noted that four of his five golfers shot personal bests on the day — Gingras, Connor Thurston, Dakota Brazee and Michael Losardo — and that Lenox has a young, but rapidly improving, team.

"That was cool they all played pretty well," Brilliant said of his team before adding that the "[Lenox] guys were nice and steady."

St. Joe falls to 0-5, 0-3 in the Berkshire South while Lenox improves to 2-1, 2-0.

ADAMS >> The Hoosac Valley golf team rebounded from a loss on Monday with a decision over Drury on Tuesday at Forest Park Country Club, 183 to 230.

Jack Sniezek and Derek Alibozek tied as the medalists, with both shooting a 45 on the day. Drury's lowest score came through Connor Kelly, who shot a 55.

Hoosac coach Jason Sniezek said that, even with the win, he wants to see his golfers continue to lower their scores.

"I thought we were kind of high for our home course, but I'll take the win," coach Sniezek said.

Hoosac improves to 2-2 overall, and 1-2 in the Berkshire North. Drury falls to 1-2 and 0-1.

NORTH ADAMS >> The McCann Tech cross-country teams hosted their first home meet of the season on Tuesday, and both sides suffered defeat.

The boys fell to Mohawk 15-39, and to Hopkins 19-39. The girls, meanwhile, fell to Mohawk 15-70.

McCann's top runner on the day was Billy Gallipeau, who finished his home course in 21 minutes, 9 seconds. Mohawk duo Luke Viens (17:58) and Zach Coburn (17:59) finished first and second. The top female finisher was Mohawk's Megan Dans in 18:28.
