High School roundup: Hoosac Valley girls basketball clinches postseason berth

CHESHIRE — The Hoosac Valley girls basketball team is headed to the postseason.

The Hurricanes (11-1) clinched a Western Mass. berth with a 53-43 victory over Monument Mountain.

Fallon Field scored 15 points and Madi Ryan added 14 for Hoosac Valley, which led 11 points at halftime.

Kailynne Frederick chipped in 10 points for the Hurricanes as well while Ellie Field had five points.

"I think we've had a good schedule," Hoosac Valley coach Ron Wojcik said. "That helps. And I think the kids are coming along. We've had a lot of new kids that are learning the system, and I think they're getting better each game."

Anika Helmke and Hailey Higgins each recorded 13 points to lead the Spartans.

MOUNT EVERETT 40, HOPKINS ACADEMY 36

HADLEY >> Gwendolyn Carpenter scored 12 of her game-high 23 points in the third quarter as visiting Mount Everett (8-3) rallied to beat Hopkins.

The Eagles trailed 18-17 at halftime, but outscored the Golden Hawks 14-9 in the third quarter.

"We started putting pressure on them" defensively, Everett coach Scott Rote said. "Gwen started taking it to the hole."

The Golden Hawks scored the first four points of the second half, forcing Rote to call a quick time out. Carpenter answered with five unanswered points and the Eagles were on their way.

MOUNT GREYLOCK 60, LENOX 45

WILLIAMSTOWN >> Jenna Benzinger scored 21 points to lead Mount Greylock to a 15-point victory over Lenox.

Lauren Howard added 15 points for the Mounties (7-4) while Ari Walden chipped in 14.

Mount Greylock, which had five overall scorers, led by only three at halftime.

"The first half was a lot of high energy," Mount Greylock coach John Jacobbe said. "Both teams went at it. In the locker room I told them I was happy with us scoring 30 points, but I was disappointed in giving up 27. Lenox earned those points, it was just about tightening up the defense."

Alice Najimy led the Millionaires with 26 points. She hit six of the teams' combined 17 3-pointers.

LENOX 48, WAHCONAH 33

LENOX >> Patrick Colvin scored a career-high 26 points as the Millionaires (5-4, 3-4) won their third straight game.

Lenox trailed Wahconah 19-14 at halftime, but outscored the Warriors 34-14 in the final 16 minutes. Those numbers included a 21-8 fourth quarter.

"We just came out in the fourth and picked up our defensive intensity," said Lenox coach Scott Sibley. "We were patient on offense and got good looks for Patrick."

Colvin was 5 for 5 from the free throw line down the stretch and that was part of a 9-for-14 fourth quarter from the charity stripe.

Luke Steinman led Wahconah with nine points.
