High school roundup: Lee girls, Monument boys tennis teams both fall


SOUTH HADLEY — The South Hadley girls tennis team used two three-set victories to pull out a 3-2 win over Lee in the semifinals of the Western Massachusetts Division III tournament on Tuesday.

Lee's Ava Martin forced a third set against Caroline Robitaille at No. 2 singles, but Robitaille earned a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win.

Aislinn Ford and Hannah Dabrouge clinched the match for South Hadley at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 over Maddie DeSantis and Angelique Nejaime.

Lee (14-4) seniors Kate Delsignor and Sarah Winston earned wins in their final matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles, respectively.

"We were that close. ... We had it on our racket and we lost," Lee coach Norma Comalli said. "The girls all played their hardest. No regrets. It just wasn't our day today.

"I'm so proud of them. How wonderfully they've done through the whole season. They've improved a lot."

Doubles — 1. Aislinn Ford/Hannah Dahrouge def. Maddie DeSantis/Angelique Nejaime 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. 2. Kate Delsignor/Anna Wang (L) def. Oliva Blaney/Alexa Blaney 6-3, 6-2.

BELCHERTOWN >> Belchertown used the its doubles teams' depth to earn a close win over Monument Mountain in the semifinals of the Western Mass. Division III tournament.

Monument's Kadin Shafiroff won his first set against Trent Zulkiewic before his opponent retired from the match at No. 1 singles. Alec Goffin earned the Spartans' (9-3) other win at No. 2 singles, battling to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over Nathan Reed. Belchertown won its doubles matches in straight sets.


Belchertown 3, Monument Mountain 2

The Hoosac Valley-Putnam Western Mass. Division IV game was postponed in the second inning, with Hoosac Valley leading 2-0. The game will resume from the second inning, today at 4 p.m. at Russell Field in Adams.
