High School Roundup: Monument Mountain boys basketball tops Wahconah in Wein tournament

NORTH ADAMS — The Monument Mountain boys basketball team used a 24-point third quarter to pull away from Wahconah for a 70-57 win in the Gene Wein Tournament, hosted at Drury on Monday night.

Conor Prince put up a game-high 24 points while Branden Perry added 22 for the Spartans.

Monument led just 24-23 at halftime before the explosive third quarter. In the fourth, the Spartans shot 11 for 12 at the charity stripe to seal the win.

"They were knocking down shots," Wahconah coach Dustin Belcher said of Monument. "We did not do a very good job of taking care of the basketball. It was a combination of the two things, they made their shots and we gave them extra chances."

For Wahconah, Joe Lavinio had 17 points and Cole Morrison added 11.

Monument improves to 1-1 while Wahconah falls to 1-2. Monument will play Drury in the championship game of the Wein tournament today, while Wahconah will play Mount Everett.

NORTH ADAMS >> Hayden Bird scored 28 points to lead Drury to the Gene Wein Tournament final today at 7 p.m.

Cristian Montoya added 15 points for the Blue Devils while Reece Racette had 11.

Cassius Conaway scored 15 points for Mount Everett while Damontti Conaway, Christian Behne and Cavan Brady each had 12.

The Eagles play in the consolation game today at 5:30 p.m. against Wahconah.

LUDLOW >> Deonte Sandifer scored 12 points to lead Taconic to a 35-point road victory.

Treyvon Ringgold scored 11 points for Taconic while Izaiya Mestre added 10.

"We had big second and third quarters," Taconic coach Bill Heaphy said. "Our defense was really good tonight. It was a really good team win, everyone contributed, but the defense was sort of the standout for us."

Taconic led, 39-17, at halftime after taking a five-point lead through one quarter of play.

High School Girls Basketball

Mount Everett 38, Lee 34

LEE >> The Mount Everett girls basketball team used a hot shooting night from Parker Snyder to pick up a win over Lee in the South County Tournament on Monday.

Playing in Lee, the Eagles got 19 points from Snyder, including five 3-pointers. Gwendolyn Carpenter chipped in with 14 in the win, including nine from the free-throw line.

The Eagles raced out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter and a 24-14 lead at halftime, but in the second half Lee started chipping away at the deficit.

For Lee, Brianna Hawley scored 13 points in the loss.

Mount Everett improves to 4-1 with the win while Lee falls to 1-3. Mount Everett will play Monument Mountain today for the tournament championship, while Lee will host Lenox in the consolation game.

Monument Mountain 54, Lenox 38

LEE >> The Monument Mountain girls used a 28-point performance from Anika Helmke to take down Lenox on Monday, 54-38, at the South County Tournament.

The Spartans put up double digits in all four quarters in the win, and held Lenox to zero points in the second to pull away before the half.

Addie McLaughlin chipped in with six for the Spartans, while Jackie Hathaway had 23 points for Lenox in the loss.

"We got shots, we just didn't hit anything in that quarter," Lenox coach Mike Nykorchuck said of his team's second quarter. "The difference in the game was Helmke. She hit four threes, but she's also a good post player, too. Every time we seemed to get close, she'd throw a dagger at us."

Lenox falls to 0-3 while Monument improves to 2-2. Monument will play Mount Everett in the championship game today, while Lenox will play Lee.

NORTH ADAMS >> The McCann Tech girls fell to Southwick on Monday at home, 48-29.

Down 21-15 at halftime, the Hornets were stung in the third quarter as Southwick put up 16 points to McCann's four to pull away for good.

McCann was led with a balanced scoring attack. Allie Gibeau led the team with six points, and four other McCann players scored four points in the loss.

Southwick was led by Halley Perker, who scored a game-high 12 points.

McCann falls to 1-2 with the loss.

DEERFIELD >> The Wahconah girls picked up a 64-48 win over Frontier on Monday evening.

Emmy Cote scored a game-high 17 points in the win.

The Warriors improve to 1-2 with the decision.

Hockey

Mount Everett 5, Shepaug (Conn.) 2

Washington, Conn. >> Jake Corcoran scored twice and added an assist in Mount Everett's victory.

Max Joyner, who had an assist, Justin Makuc and Charlie Grace also scored for the Eagles (1-1-1).

Shepaug grabbed a 1-0 lead through one period and the teams entered the third frame tied, 1-1. From there, Corcoran scored twice, Joyner put one in and Grace scored to make it 5-1 in favor of the Eagles.

For Makuc, it was the first career goal for the senior. Overall, it was the third game in four days for Mount Everett.
