High school roundup: Mount Greylock golf picks up win


WILLIAMSTOWN >> The Mount Greylock golf team (1-0, 1-0 Berkshire North) started its season with a divisional win, as Kyle Alvarez and Ben Gilooly shared medalist honors in a 180-194 victory over Hoosac Valley (0-1, 0-1) at Waubeeka Golf Links on Friday.

Hoosac's low scorer, Henry Sniezek, shot a 45. Jack Sniezek shot a 46, but the two were the only Hurricanes to shoot under 50.


HOOSAC VALLEY (194) — Jack Sniezek 46, Derek Alibozek 52, Henry Sniezek 45, Luc Trombley 51, Hayden Grimes 53, Colby Rougeau 65.

MOUNT GREYLOCK (180) — Kyle Alvarez 41, Ben Gilooly 41, Mark Hayden 55, Tenley Smith 51, Bennett Zimmerman 47, Hunter Sarkis 51.

LENOX >> At Cranwell, three Pittsfield golfers shot under 40 in a season-opening win over Lenox.

Kevin Quinto was medalist with a 2-over 37, while Justin Martin had 38 and Ricky Berrien shot 39.

But Lenox coach Dick Salinetti said he was very happy with how his team, which includes two seventh graders and an eighth grader, performed against one of the North's top teams.

Eighth-grader Matt Shields shot a 41 while co-captain Noah Hunter shot 43.

"I'm extremely pleased with their performance," said Salinetti. "For our first match, I found it very acceptable."

Pittsfield is 1-0 while Lenox is 0-1.

GREAT BARRINGTON >> Taconic's Mike Kays earned medalist honors with a 39, leading the Braves over Mount Everett at Egremont Country Club.

Taconic's Ross Omelenchuck had the second lowest round of the day, shooting a 40. Brett Murphy sank birdies on holes two and seven. Kolby Bleau led Mount Everett (1-1) with a 51.

One day after earning a season-opening road win over St. Joseph, Everett coach Fred Finkle said his players struggled with their home course.

"Egremont is a tougher course than where we played yesterday," Finkle said. "The kids are young and a few had trouble."

Taconic is 1-0.
