Hoosac Valley

Coach: Eryn Brewer

Key returners: Boys -- Keith Pero, Jr.; Mike DiSanti, Soph. Girls -- Liz Bernardi, Fr.; Jordan Vanuni, Jr.; Emma Whitney, Fr; Julia Whitney, Fr.

Things you should know:

n The Hoosac boys are not blessed with numbers. A half-dozen swimmers suit up for Brewer.

n Brewer has a 21-girl squad. While it is smaller than what Hoosac has put into the pool, the second-year coach said with a squad of young swimmers, the smaller numbers allow her to do more teaching.

n The Hurricanes have to replace Cori Ghidotti and Alyssa Bush, both of whom would be juniors this year. They chose to swim for an age-group team put together by Williams swim coach Steve Kuster. Monument Mountain

Coach: Jill Svirida

Key returners: Maeve Wilber, So.; Anna Zdziarski, Sr.; Rowan Rice, So.; Derrek Rueger, Jr.; Will Palmer.

Things you should know:

n The Spartans are already off to a good start, with a narrow ewin over Mount Anthony earlier this year.

n Svirida doesn't have great numbers, but both her boys and girls teams have veteran leadership.

n Wilber and Rueger, All-Eagle picks last year, are expected to be standouts this winter.

Mount Anthony

Coach: Anna Swierad

Key returners: Boys -- Ryan Spencer, So.; Austin Becker-Ulrich, Jr.; Brian Steinhoff, So.; Robert Murphy, Sr. Girls -- Kate Ahearn, Jr.; Kate Montague, Sr.; Heather Foley, Sr.

Things you should know:

n Murphy is one of the few seniors on the 18-swimmer boys roster. He is a three-year veteran of the Patriots program. "I don't ever remember having that many" swimmers, said Swierad.

n There are currently 35 active swimmers on the girls roster, the most Swierad has had in years. "Word is spreading in the high school and it's more of an accepted sport,' she said. "We have a core group that is very competitive."

n Unlike the boys teams in Berkshire County and New York, Mount Anthony has no sectional or state championships to swim for. The Patriots have the only high school varsity swim team in Vermont.

New Lebanon

Coach: Tim Christianson

Key returners: Boys -- Tristan Southard, Sr.; Travis Liccardi, Soph. Girls -- Jill Risko, Sr.; Hannah French, So.

Things you should know:

n The Indians, who have a co-op with Berlin, have four swimmers and they will have to swim all over the place.

n Like Taconic Hills, New Lebanon does not swim in girls sectional competition, as girls swimming is a fall sport in New York.

n Freshman Zach Shepard is the distance swimmer.

Coach: Jim Harrington

Key returners: Boys -- Kenny Black, Sr.; Aaron Coty, Jr.; Brian Desrosiers, So. Girls -- Theresa Murphy, Jr.; Jessie Marsh, Jr.

Newcomers: Zach Williams, Jr.

Things you should know:

n Harrington expects the PHS boys to repeat as division champions. They tied with Taconic last year.

n Murphy is one of the Generals' most versatile swimmers and will compete where Harrington needs her.

n The boys' team has great numbers, with 17 swimmers.

St. Joseph's

Coach: Shannon McMahon

Key returners: Boys -- Connor Lein. Girls -- Katie Nugai, Jr.; Aileen Archambault, Sr.; Maddie Roulier, Sr.

Things you should know:

n Nugai has already qualified for Western Mass. in the 50-yard freestyle.

n The Crusaders have strong veterans in Nugai, Roulier and Archambault, but depth will be an issue for both boys' and girls' teams.

n Lein has been the most consistent swimmer for the boys team so far.

Coach: Marisa Plant

Key returners: Boys -- George Sommerville, Jr.; Craig Spencer-Hopkins, Sr. Girls -- Gillian Campbell, Sr.; Ruth Fiorini, So.

Things you should know:

n Sommerville, the returning All-Eagle MVP, is the Braves' all-everything. He will swim where Taconic needs him.

n On the girls' side, Campbell, a sophomore, is expected to be a consistent scorer for Taconic.

n Plant expects the boys, co-champs in 2012, to be competitive in the North again this year.

Taconic Hills

Coach: Boys -- Tom Russo. Girls -- Ryan Kendrick

Key returners: Boys -- Cody Carpenter, Sr.; Alex Mierzejewski, Sr.; Justin Muller, Sr.; Garret Simmons, Sr. Girls -- Abbey Nack, Sr.; Bridgette Proper, Sr.; Alicia Kostszewski, Sr.; Jamie Albrecht, Jr.

Things you should know:

n There are 14 swimmers on the boys team and the quartet listed above are the only seniors.

n Of the 20 girls on the roster, Nack has the most experience. She has been a varsity swimmer at Taconic Hills for six years.

n Sophomore Ted Koch swims sprints and freshman Olin Flaum will go in multiple events, and they are two of the top newcomers.

Coach: Dave Lussier

Key returners: Boys -- Kyle Miller, Jr. Devin Gale, Sr. Girls -- Bethany McBain, Sr.; Logan Gresser.

Key newcomer: Summer Daley, Fr.

Things you should know:

n The Warriors had a good turnout for the girls with 18 swimmers. But the boys team, although stocked with veterans, has only eight members.

n Gresser and McBain are the veteran leaders of the girls team.

n Lussier said he's comfortable swimming newcomer Summer Daley "in just about any event."
