Hillman posts 5-over 75 in opening round of the Massachusetts Open
WORCESTER >> Taconic Golf Club head professional Josh Hillman shot a 5-over-par 75 in the opening round of the 107th Massachusetts Open on Monday, putting himself in a position where he will have to improve on his score in order to make the 36-hole cut.
Crestview County Club's Jason Thrasher, who finished third in last year's event, shot a 3-under-par 67 to lead Connecticut golfer Blake Morris by one shot in the $75,000, 54-hole event.
There are eight players two shots behind the leader, including six-time Mass. Open champion Geoffrey Sisk.
Hillman started well, finishing the front nine in even-par 35 with two birdies, two bogeys and five pars. Things didn't go as well on the back nine, however. He had one birdie, four bogeys — including a pair on the final two holes — and a costly double bogey on the par-3 13th to card a 40.
Hillman is tied for 69th place. The field will be cut after today's round to the low 50 and ties, or those within seven shots of the lead.
