LEE >> It took just three games for the Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse team to match its win total from last season.
The Hurricanes outlasted Lee on Friday, 8-6, to improve their record to 2-1. Hoosac went 2-10 last year, but the Hurricanes have defeated St. Mary's and now Lee this season, sandwiching the team's only loss, which came against county power Mount Greylock.
"Our goal is to win six games," Hoosac coach Molly Meczywor said. "My goal is to build a sustainable varsity program. Last year we played 12 games, we won two. This year, we bumped up to 16 games, and so I challenged the girls and asked 'what's an attainable goal?'
"They said six was realistic, but now they're starting to say, 'maybe our goal should have been eight. Maybe we should be thinking about making the tournament.' In order to build a varsity program, they need to have that mindset."
Claudia Bresett, Sara Tomkiewicz and Aubrey Rumbolt each scored two times for the Hurricanes while Abi Disbrow registered six saves in the win over Lee. Faith Hall and Alie Mendel also scored for Hooasc.
For Lee (1-1), Annie Macchi recorded a hat trick while Emma Bartini, Jodi Morawiec and McKenna Hammerle also scored. Playing the first half of the game, Bridey Nicotra had seven saves for the Wildcats while Taryn Paul collected six saves in the second.
Hoosac got off to a quick start, taking a 3-0 lead just over 10 minutes in. Mendel, Rumbolt and Bresett each connected for the Hurricanes.
That lead stayed at three and was 5-2 for Hoosac heading into the halftime break.
"We said that we wanted to come out really strong and score a couple quick goals," Meczywor said. "That's what we did against St. Mary's, and I think the girls played with a little bit of confidence."
Lee, despite missing several key players, made a run to begin the second half. Macchi completed her hat trick with 22:19 remaining and Bartini connected on her goal just 59 seconds later.
But Hoosac fought back, and two goals from Tomkiewicz extended the team's lead to 7-4.
"The 3-0 lead, that hurt," Lee coach Dave Galisa said. "The final score was a two-goal difference. We talked originally about getting off to a quick start, but the ground balls killed us. If you miss ground balls, you start panicking a little, you try and do more 1-on-1."
The Wildcats pulled within two with 13:32 still remaining as Morawiec scored. Then, Lee pulled within 7-6 with 5:54 left when Hammerle connected.
But Hoosac picked up an insurance goal only 25 seconds later when Bresett scored, and neither team found the back of the net over the final five minutes.
"We wanted to keep possession in the second half," Bresett said. "Lee improved in the second half. We didn't want to push it for more goals, because they could have scored more, too."
