Hoosac Valley girls, Mount Anthony boys earn swimming victories

NORTH ADAMS -- Emma Whitney and Ellie Field were double winners, and Hoosac Valley swept the relays to earn a 107-63 win over Mount Anthony in girls swimming at the Northern Berkshire YMCA on Friday afternoon.

On the boys side, Ryan Spencer and Austin Ulrich were double winners as Mount Anthony defeated the Hurricane boys, 85-51.

Whitney picked up wins in the 100 backstroke and the 500 freestyle, while Field's victories came in the 100 butterfly and the 200 free.

"We have a good team," said Whitney, who has already qualified for the Western Mass. meet in the 200 and 500 free and the 100 back. "We're versatile, with a lot of people that can swim all the strokes. I think that's an advantage."

The meet was fairly close at the break, with the Hurricanes leading only 34-28. But a sweep of the 100 fly by Field, Alyssa Bush and Liz Bartlett was probably the key race of the meet. Whitney's wins in the 100 back and the 500 free bookended a Hoosac win in the 200 freestyle relay.

"I thought Mount Anthony swam well," Whitney said after the meet. "The score was a lot closer this time than the last time we went against them."

Cori Ghidotti took a victory in the 100 breaststroke for Hoosac, as well.

Mount Anthony's Phebe Hall (200 individual medley), Kate Ahearn (100 free) and April Foley (50 free) also won on Friday.

Ahearn edged the Hurricanes' Liz Bernardy by about a tenth of a second to score a come-from-behind win in the 100 free.

On the boys side, the Hurricanes' Mike DiSanti was the best sprinter in the pool, winning the 50 and 100 free events. Hoosac's Keith Pero also picked up a win in the 500 freestyle.

Pero's strong effort in the 500 put the Hurricanes only 12 back at 52-40, but the Patriots' depth gave them the win.

"Yeah, we only have five guys, so it's always tough to compete with a bigger team, like Mount Anthony," said DiSanti. "Right now, the focus for me is to qualify for Western Mass. in the 100. I've already qualified in the 50."

Mount Anthony got wins by Spencer in the 100 back and Ulrich in the 100 breast to close out the win.
