Host families needed for exchange students

Friday August 17, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- A student exchange group is looking for a few more families to say bienvenidos to youths from Spain.

For the first time, Pocassett-based Carousel Student Tours is expanding its outreach to western Massachusetts and has formed a partnership with Pittsfield's two high schools to welcome a group of 15 exchange students, ages 14 to 17, from Spain for a three-week visit to the Berkshires and surrounding regions.

These particular students will be visiting from the Cadíz region of Spain through a scholarship program, from Sept. 6 through 27. Organizer Sue Boswell, however, said that in order for all the students to be accomodated, a few more local host families are needed to host four boys.

"This is our first time hosting here and hopefully next time, the students from Spain who come here will open their homes to students in Pitts field," Boswell said.

The organizer said she is looking for families of high school students whose students attend either Pittsfield or Taconic high schools. The students from Spain will be scheduled to shadow the host family high school students in class two days a week. The other three weekdays, the Spanish students will attend field trips. Weekends are time for the families to do activities of their own leisure and choosing.

"The only requirement is a desire to welcome a foreign student into one's family circle and show him or her the same interest and caring any traveler seeks when in a strange land," Boswell said.

Full-time hosts are preferred but part-time hosts would be considered. The exchanged students are required to be able to speak English, and at least need to be able to provide a bed and meals to share.
