HS wrestling: Everett's Lupiani, Monument's Christianson reach D-III state championship matches

Two Berkshire County wrestlers will vie for MIAA Division III state championships later today.

Mount Everett 113-pounder Bradley Lupiani and Monument Mountain 220-pounder Jonah Christianson advanced to the championship round earlier Wednesday at Wakefield Memorial High School. The Division III title matches begin at 5 p.m.

Lupiani, now 33-1 this season, won a 10-7 decision over Danvers' Chris Davis in the semifinals at 113. The Western Mass. champ will face Central Mass. champ Kevin Tomasetti of Holliston in tonight's championship match.

At 220, Christianson (31-5) advanced via injury-default win over Lynnfield/North Reading's Tom Arsenault. He will face Wakefield's Alex Kane, the Northern Mass. runner-up last weekend, in the final.

Three other Berkshire County wrestlers were beaten in their semifinal matches. At 160 pounds, Western Mass. champion Travis Kuni of Taconic lost to Central mass. champ Alec Goiner of Tyngsboro by a 19-2 technical fall. Mount Greylock 182-pounder Ross Jackson was pinned by Hingham's John Kay in 2 minutes, 27 seconds, and Taconic 285-pounder Tajaye Davis lost a 4-2 decision to Southern Mass. champion Kevin Beane of Pembroke. They will wrestle in consolation semifinals later Wednesday.

In an early match in the consolation brackets, Greylock 126-pounder Travis Hilchey advanced to the third-place match with an 8-2 decision over Sabis' Jehu Barbee. With the win, Hilchey avenged his Western Mass. semifinal overtime loss to Barbee this past weekend.
