It's never OK to walk on train tracks

Friday November 16, 2012

On Sunday, Nov. 11, at noon, while driving on Silver Street in Great Barrington, I saw a mother take her young son by the hand and lead him down the middle of the railroad tracks heading for Maple Street. Please, parents, don’t teach your child that it is OK to walk on railroad tracks even if you "know" that no train is due.

Almost every year we hear of someone being killed by a train. Letting your child think that it is safe to walk on the tracks is tantamount to handing him a loaded gun and hoping it won’t go off.

True, we now have rail trails which run along former road beds, but that is a far cry from walking on a track in active, daily use. For the sake of your child, stay off the tracks!
