Jail for man with 30 bags of heroin

Saturday September 8, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- A city man who was caught with a variety of illegal drugs when police served him with court papers pleaded guilty to three charges and was sent to jail for 18 months.

On Friday in Central Berkshire District Court, Jeffrey Renzi, 37, of Onota Street, pleaded guilty to single counts of possession of heroin with the intent to distribute and possession of cocaine and marijuana.

In early August, Renzi was found with 30 bags of heroin and a small amount of crack cocaine and marijuana after a police officer went to serve an abuse prevention order to him, according to a Pittsfield Police report. The officer spotted Renzi on South Street, served Renzi the order and ended up frisking him because Renzi was acting nervous and kept putting his hands in his pockets after being ordered not to.

On Friday, Renzi admitted his guilt and Judge Fredric D. Rutberg sentenced him to 18 months in the Berkshire Jail & House of Correction where he has already been for about a month on $5,000 bail following his arrest. The judge also recommended that Renzi be allowed to attend an in-jail drug addiction program.

The sentence was in line with a plea deal between Renzi’s attorney, Marc C. Vincelette, and the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office. Renzi’s heroin charge was reduced from a second offense to a first offense, preventing Renzi from possibly serving state prison time.

According to the DA’s office, Renzi has a seven-page rap sheet.

In September 2011, he was found not guilty of six felony larceny charges following a trial in Berkshire Superior Court. He and three others had allegedly stolen six large steel barrels worth more than $40,000 that were sold as scrap for a fraction of that price.
