Jessie Tobin, Emma Wilber register top finishes at state swimming


Berkshire County did not produce any winners at the MIAA Division I state swim meet this past weekend, but there were some strong finishes.

St. Joseph was led by Jessie Tobin in the state meet at Boston University. The junior swimmer finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:06.23 and fourth in the 200 free (1:55.54). The 500 finish was over five seconds faster than her seed time.

There was another top-three finish from Berkshire County, as Monument Mountain's Emma Wilber was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.77). She also registered a fifth-place finish in the 100 butterfly (58.90).

Monument's Caroline Bissaillon followed up her two individual championships at Western Mass. with a top-five finish at states. Caroline Bissaillon was fifth in the 50 free with a registered a final time of 24.42.

She was one of the reasons that the Spartans were able to record an eighth place finish at the D-I girls meet, with 109 points. Westford Academy (312 points) was the team winner, while St. Joseph (53.5) was 17th overall.

The only other top-five finish by Berkshire County in the girls D-I meet was from the Monument 200 free relay squad. Comprised of Kathleen Bissaillon, Anna Rubino, Wilber and Caroline Bissaillon, the team finished in 1:41.77, good for a fourth-place finish.

Aubrey Blanchard, Kathleen Bissaillon, Wilber and Caroline Bissaillon swam the 400 free relay team for Monument and finished in seventh place with a time of 3:44.46.

The only other top-10 finish was from Caroline Bissaillon in the 100 free (53.80).

Other participants from Berkshire County were Emma Whitney of St. Joseph in the 100 backstroke (13th) and 100 fly (26th), St. Joseph's Elizabeth Bernardy in the 100 breast (14th) and 200 free (19th), Kathleen Bissaillon in the 100 free (19th) and 50 free (20th), Elizabeth Bartlett of the Crusaders in the 100 breast (19th) and St. Joseph's Theresa Kirsimagi in the 100 fly (29th).

Finally, St. Joe's 200 medley relay team of Whitney, Bartlett, Tobin and Bernardy finished in 11th while its 200 free relay team, with the same swimmers, finished 15th. Monument's 200 medley relay team, with Olivia Rubino, Blanchard, Sophie Burnell and Anna Rubino, recorded a 26th-place finish.

On the D-I boys side, Monument finished in 19th place as a team, with 30 points. The team champion was Saint John's Prep (287 points).

Brandon Louison led Monument with two fifth-place finishes. The junior registered a time of 47.63 in the 100 free and a time of 53.00 in the 100 back.

Other individual finishers were Monument's Ben Wyatt in the 100 breast (21st) and Nick Gray of the Spartans in the 500 free (27th).

In relays, Monument was 16th in the 200 medley. That squad was comprised of Nick Dillon, Wyatt, Gray and Louison. The same four swimmers made up the 400 free relay team, which finished in 20th place.
