Lee girls lacrosse hangs on to beat Greylock
LEE -- Even on a day when the ball wasn't theirs for very long, the Lee Wildcats maintained their dominance of Berkshire County by pouncing.
Mount Greylock's girls lacrosse team simply wasn't as coolly efficient in a 20-11 loss to the defending county champs.
"The players I have, they definitely know what they've got to do," said Lee coach Dave Galisa. "When they see an opening, they're going to take it. Sometimes they may try a little too hard but I think I'd rather have them try a little too hard than back off."
The Wildcats (2-0, 2-0 Berkshire County) fought off a second-half charge from the Mounties, scoring the last seven goals of the game after Greylock (1-1, 0-1) had pulled within 13-11. Senior Megan Gaul had six goals and six assists while Moriah McKenna had four goals and five helpers. Lydia Graham finished with six goals and an assist.
The Mounties' Lucy Barrett had three second-half goals, including two in less than 90 seconds that cut the lead to two. Greylock never scored again, hampered by a slew of penalties that led to four man-up goals in quick succession from Lee.
"Playing two men down kills your momentum," said Mounties coach Lindsey von Holtz, "and the morale of everyone on the team. They're going to get goals in that situation. As soon as one happened, heads were down. When that second one happened, heads were basically on the ground. You can't play with your head on the ground."
Greylock couldn't get a ball past Lee goalie Hannah Hunter late, with the junior shutting the Mounties down over the final eight minutes, 35 seconds. Hunter was just as staunch early in the game, finishing with 15 saves. Eight of those stops came in the opening 15 minutes.
Lee struggled to move the ball from the defensive third, so Hunter's play was huge in the first half when the Wildcats built an eight-goal lead. Many of those opportunities were point-blank.
"The first 15 minutes got me going. My adrenaline was good," Hunter said. "I had a break in the middle where I was falling apart and then I got back into it."
Barrett was able to help her team get back in the game by adjusting her aim away from Hunter in the second half. It wasn't quite enough to finish off that second-half rally.
The sophomore, who didn't play the sport last year, said the Mounties are still getting to know each other on Monday after graduating an 87-goal scorer in Annie Flynn. Greylock should be able to convert more of that possession into goals -- and wins -- with some more experience.
"We've only had a couple weeks of practice," Barrett said. "I know we're going to improve through the whole season. We're a very new, young team this year. We have to get used to each other and each other's strengths. We've only played one game together, so we hadn't gotten used to communicating."
