GREAT BARRINGTON -- A Lee man was arraigned on charges he assaulted a police officer investigating a shoplifting case.

Nathaniel R. Greene, 56, of Willow Street in Lee, was arraigned Monday on one count of assault and battery of a police officer, one count of disorderly conduct and one count of resisting arrest. He was released on $250 bail.

Lee Police Officer Timothy J. Kelly said in a report that he spotted Green while patrolling late Saturday night. Kelly said Green fit the description of a man suspected in a shoplifting case earlier in the day.

According to Kelly, Green was immediately combative and swore at him repeatedly. When Kelly attempted to put Green into custody, Green fought, swinging his arms at and kicking the officer, according to court records.
