Lee nail salon adds tanning services

LEE -- The owner of a popular manicure salon has gone into the tanning business.

Michelle Tran has taken over Paradise Island Tanning next door to her Lucky Nails shop, both on the Baird & Benton block on Main Street.

Tran bought Paradise Island from Toni and Gregory D'Arcangelo, of Pittsfield, who opened the tanning booths in 2008, five years after the debut of Lucky Nails. Tran says she officially acquired the tanning salon Sept. 1 for an undisclosed amount of money.

Tran believes adding the tanning salon will be good for both businesses in the wake of downtown Lee's revitalization, which included local businessman Michael McManmon refurbishing the Baird & Benton building more than two years ago.

"We get a lot of foot traffic now with the renovation," she said. "If we're busy [at Lucky Nails], people can go tan and come back to have their nails done."

As for Paradise Island, Tran says the storefront didn't need renovating, but she has doubled its payroll and improved customer services in the first month of ownership.

The tanning salon has gone from two to four part-time employees and changed the light bulbs in the booths for a better color tan.

"We also added more [tanning] products to our line to give customers more options," she said.

Tran emphasized Paradise Island will strictly follow the safety and health regulations governing tanning salons -- clearly posted at the front desk -- and plans to offer an alternative to traditional tanning.

"Spray tan is in the future for those concerned with getting skin cancer," she said.

Paradise Island is open Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 9:30 to 3 p.m., closed on Sunday. Walk-ins welcome or customers can call for an appointment at 243-8300.
