Lee volleyball defeats Mount Greylock in 5 sets
WILLIAMSTOWN — In an important Berkshire North divisional matchup, Lee bounced back from being down one set to beat Mount Greylock 3-2 in the full five sets on Monday night. The scores were 25-17, 20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11.
These two teams met at the beginning of the season. It was a matchup in which the Mounties came away with the victory in Lee. As a result, while this wasn't mathematically a must-win game, it felt close to for the Wildcats.
"This game could've decided Berkshire County champions," Lee's Bailey Thomas said. "[Coach] kept reminding us to just keep our heads in the game."
For Lee (7-1), Kendra Williams had 36 assists, six kills and five assists. Also for the Wildcats, Shenna Tyer added 10 kills, six assists and two blocks while Anna Wang contributed 18 digs.
Lee took the first set, but it wasn't easy. The two teams were matching shot-for-shot, with the teams staying within two points of each other. Lee then caught fire, scoring 14 of 21 points en route to winning the first set 25-17.
"[Mount Greylock] is a very good team, we just had to keep it positive," Lee coach John Warner said. "We haven't really peaked yet. I feel like there are times we have flashes of brilliance followed by spasms of stupidity."
As it was in the first set, the entire match ended up being one of streaks. Greylock went on to win the next two sets by a combined score of seven points.
The Mounties leaned on Jenna Benzinger, who had 17 kills and five blocks and Dagny Albano. who added 24 assists. Marley Buffis had 14 digs and Serena chow added six kills and four aces for Greylock (5-2).
In the fourth set, the score was tied, 16-16, before Lee fired off eight-straight points to take a 24-16 lead.
But, this match was one of streaks, and Greylock didn't go quietly, scoring the next four points. But the deficit was too much to overcome as Lee took the fourth set 25-20.
With the score tied 3-3 in the first-to-15 fifth set, Lee went on a 12-8 scoring run in which they never trailed, clinching the match.
Both teams are tied in the Berkshire North division.
"We weren't able to put the game away when we had the chance," Coach John Albano said. "We will have to win the rest of our games."
Mount Greylock looks to bounce back on Wednesday night it plays undefeated Pittsfield. Lee's next game is also Wednesday, as they return home to face Mount Anthony.
