Tuesday February 5, 2013

A bird-banding demonstration will be held Saturday, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sponsored by Berkshire Sanctuaries, its instructor is Christyna Laubach and volunteers will be on hand from the Sanctuary and the science department at Lenox Memorial Middle and High School.

Handheld birds can be observed at the demonstration. The instructor and volunteers will demonstrate the proper use of mist nets and band the birds that are captured. Participants will learn what valuable information can be obtained by this fieldwork. Participants will help gather data and release the birds unharmed.

The demonstration is free with regular sanctuary admission. Participants are free to come and go during the program. Registration is not required.

The demonstration is suitable for children 3-18 years. It is free for Mass Audubon members, $5 for nonmembers and $3 for children.
