SHEFFIELD — The Lenox and Mount Everett girls soccer teams entered their matchup on Wednesday with zero combined losses and ties this season.

Sarah Fenton made sure it was Lenox that left Sheffield still unbeaten, scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute as the Millionaires defeated the Eagles 2-1.

Fenton slid the ball into the back of the net in the final 20 minutes off an assist from Tova Brown. Lenox improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Berkshire South with the win.

"I always want to make that back-post run and just get back there because there are always times where the ball goes across and it looks like it's going to go in but it doesn't," Fenton said. "Today I did that run, and it worked out."

Madeline VonRuden opened the scoring in the 10th minute for Mount Everett (6-1, 3-1) off an assist from Logan Rathbun. But the Eagles weren't able to hold the advantage into halftime, as Brown equalized from Nicole Gamberoni with 8:44 remaining in the first half to tie it for Lenox.

"We always play really tough games when we're out here," Lenox coach Kyle Zinchuk said. "I don't think we played our best game today, but I told [the girls], 'good teams find a way to make it work even when everything's not happening for them.'

"Getting that away win gives them confidence," Zinchuk added. "Everett is a great team, they played really well today. I want to give them all the credit, but it was nice to come out of here with a win."

After a choppy first half played mostly in the middle of the field, the game opened up in the final 40 minutes. Fewer than four minutes into the second frame, Gamberoni fired one off the crossbar, almost giving the Millionaires their first lead.

With about 20 minutes remaining, Lenox had threatened a few times in the span of about five minutes. Following an Everett timeout with 20:06 remaining to help slow the momentum, Eagles goalkeeper Madison Ullrich had to make a jumping save only seven seconds later to temporarily preserve the tied game.

But Lenox finally broke through three minutes later as Fenton, a junior, scored.

"We love playing teams like this because we learn," Mount Everett coach Jess Murtagh said. "[The girls] are not excited with the loss, I'm not excited with the loss. But I'm very, very impressed with how our team fared."

Everett had a chance to equalize with just under 16 minutes left as Gwendolyn Carpenter served in a strong corner, but the shot went wide of the post once it was finally corralled.

With just under 10 minutes remaining, Carpenter got a good shot on net, but Lenox goalkeeper Shannon Meisberger made the diving stop.

Lenox is back in action Friday against Hoosac Valley at home. Mount Everett returns to the field a week from today against McCann Tech in Sheffield.
