Lenox girls, Wahconah boys both take second at Western Mass. team track meet

BUCKLAND >> Berkshire County track and field teams performed well at the Western Massachusetts Division II Championship at Mohawk Trail Regional High School on Saturday. The meet featured several personal bests, and in one case, a record-setting performance, allowing county teams to rank among the top in Western Mass. Division II. The Lenox girls earned their highest finish ever, placing second with 67 points. Host Mohawk finished first with 94 points. South Hadley finished third with 62.50 points. Monument Mountain finished a close fourth with 58.50 points. The Wahconah boys added several points late in the meet to earn a second-place tie with Monson at 74 points. Mohawk took the boys' title as well with 96.50 points.

Lenox's Shannon Meisberger was one of the top point earners for the Millionaires. She placed first in the 400 meter hurdles with a 1 minute, 05.55 second time. She placed second in the 100 meter hurdles in 15,68, and she was the anchor for the third-place 1600 meter relay team. Monument's Allison Kinne placed second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.87). Wahconah's Gianna Moncecchi placed third in the 100 meter hurdles (17.07), followed by Monument's Paige Gray (17.34).

Meisberger had a very busy day at the track, and she credits her strong performance to the time spent training, in-season and in the offseason.

"We have a such a good cross country team, that it carries everything into the postseason," she said.

Lenox does have a dominant cross country team, but the Millionaires performed well in non-distance events as well. Tova Brown earned a second-place finish in the 400 meter dash (1:02.29). And in the field, Micha Hatfl finished fourth in the discus throw with a 87-10 distance. The improved depth across all events helped the Millionaires more earn points in more areas.

"Last year we finished third, but this [finish] is on the strength of our track team," Lenox coach Jeanne Teasdale said. "The strength was in the relay teams and in having Shannon in the hurdles scoring 18 points altogether.

"The depth of our distance runners has been fantastic, and we were able to use them in the relays as well."

Maggie Sorrentino finished in first place in the 800 meter run (2:28.84), followed by Maddie Albert of Mount Greylock. Emma Jourdain finished third in the two mile (11:41.19). Albert finished fourth in the 400 meter dash (1:02.57). Wahconah's Victoria Gamberoni finished third in the one-mile run (5:27.19). Greylock's Julia Szczepaniak finished fourth in 100 meter dash (13.59), and fifth in the 200 meter dash (28.66).

Lenox's 1,600 meter relay team helped it clinch second place, but Monument Mountain's 1,600 relay team re-wrote the record books. The team of Meri Powell, Aubrey Blanchard, Kinne and Jasmin Johannsdottir set a new course record, finishing in first place with a 4:09.09 time. The team shaved just under five seconds off their seed time. Each runner executed their hand-off perfectly, showing strong chemistry despite only running together twice as a unit.

"We were all pretty tired. We all came from different races," Johannsdottir said. "We were just hoping to get first place. ... We had no idea we were going to get this time."

Monument also placed fourth in the 400-meter relay.

For the boys, Wahconah showed it has several runners with blazing top-end speed. Matt Lighten won the 100 meter dash in 11.21 seconds. Sean Harvey won the 110 meter hurdles in 15.91 second and the 400 meter hurdles in 57.86 seconds. The Warriors dominated the relays as well, winning the 3200 relay in 8:46.48, 21 seconds ahead of second-place Monson. They won the 1600 meter relay in 3:35.59, and the 400 meter relay in 45.93.

"Mohawk has the depth to get first place, and then fourth and fifth in a lot of events. ... But the guys we were counting on to come through like Sean and Matt to win their events is as much as we could've asked," Wahconah coach James McMahon said.

Harvey said entering a meet with a high seed time can put pressure on an athlete to perform to that standard. However, he added that taking the track with other high-level athletes motivates him to go faster.

Devon Mikaniewicz picked up eight points in the triple jump. Jaryd Massaro finished fifth in the 800 in 2:07.88.

Matthew Donelly earned a point in the shot put, and P.J. Pharmer earned a point in the 400 meter dash. Other top finishers include, Drury's Connor Meehan finished first in the 800 meter in 1:56.42. Hoosac Valley's Peter Barrow won the shot put with a 46-02 distance. Monument Mountain's Jordan Piepho won the javelin with a 43-01 distance. Greylock's Tommy Kirby won the two mile in 10:03. Hoosac's Jared Haley finished third in 10:26.13.

Berkshire County athletes will look to improve their times/distance next week at the MIAA Division II Western/Central Mass. meet, with hopes of advancing to the state finals.
