Letter: Bureaucrats don’t need weaponry

Posted

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

I’m very concerned that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is asking for submachine guns. As I understand it, this is a regulatory agency, not a law enforcement organization. When such a regulatory agency encounters an armed situation, it is time to call in people whose job it is to defuse such a situation. For a regulatory agency to have armed personnel only encourages over-reaction on their part, and escalation in the rare case that they do encounter some sort of armed resistance.

Please don’t allow the U.S. to become a police state. Stop the militarization of agencies that are neither military nor law enforcement. Support H.R. 4934, the Regulatory Agency Demilitarization Act.
