Letter: Celebrating a safe place, for 25 years

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

In a quiet residential neighborhood, lives are being saved and transformed. I know this because I am privileged to be a board member for the Elizabeth Freeman Center.

Since 1974, the Elizabeth Freeman Center (EFC) has provided leadership and services to address domestic and sexual violence in Berkshire County. Every day, 24 hours a day, EFC confronts the life and death issues faced by victims of battering and sexual assault. We are the front line and major safety net in our community for victims seeking safety and a new life.

As part of the essential and life-saving services offered by EFC, one of great importance is the shelter. In October of 1989 the shelter first opened its doors. Each year, EFC shelters over 150 adults and children who are fleeing violence in a home-like atmosphere.

In addition to a safe and nurturing environment, all services available from the Elizabeth Freeman Center are provided to shelter residents with collaboration and support with other social service agencies. Since its opening, the shelter has never been empty.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of providing safe housing to families torn asunder by domestic violence EFC is holding a household shower and fundraiser this Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 175 Wendell Ave. Pittsfield, to restock the shelter with essential household items. The goal is to not only celebrate, but to provide the shelter with new household linens, towels, cookware and small kitchen appliances.

In addition to the on-site celebration and fundraiser, persons interested in donating to EFC’s household shower can use our two online registries at elizabethfreemancenter.org/what-we-do/events.
