Letter: Child literacy boosted by Ramsdell Sunday program
Child literary boosted by Ramsdell Sunday program
To the editor:
As the South County Community Liaison at Berkshire United Way, and a resident of Great Barrington, I would like to commend the Friends of the Great Barrington Libraries, the trustees, the Great Barrington Selectboard and town manager for the success of the Ramsdell Library Winter Sunday Afternoons pilot program.
The Berkshire United Way has expanded our commitment to early childhood literacy through the Chapter One: Our Kids, Our Towns, Our Future initiative. We are coming together as a South County community to make sure our children are ready and able to transition to kindergarten and improve literacy, thereby ensuring our children are set up for success in school and in life.
It is true that our community, workforce, and economy depend on meeting these important goals. It is far more important, and fundamental, that our children and families are able to access health, joy and, the most precious commodity, a sense of wonder.
Thanks to the vision, tenacity and care of our community, we now have Sunday's at the Ramsdell as a resource. And the vision doesn't stop there — the weekly programming is the very stuff that makes me so happy to call these Berkshires hills our home.
