Letter: 'Club kid' Conyers earned second chance
'Club kid' Conyers earned second chance
To the editor:
I applaud Pittsfield Mayor Linda Tyer for the appointment of Frederick Conyers Jr. to the Pittsfield Fire Department.
As a former teacher working with adolescents with troubled backgrounds, as the director of Guidance Services at the Pittsfield Boys & Girls Club in the 1990s, and as a former corrections officer for the Berkshire County House of Correction, I firmly believe almost everyone deserves a "second chance."
Freddie Jr. is a "club kid" and was polite and respectful during my time spent there. I understand the concerns of the Pittsfield firefighters union, Local 2647 of the International Association of Firefighters, but my gut makes me feel he will prove otherwise. I have tremendous respect for firefighters and think that Freddie Jr. will be the ultimate team player in your department.
To this point, Freddie Jr. has made an honest effort in changing his life around and being a good citizen. This opportunity with the PFD will afford him room to grow and live an even better life. Please join me in supporting Frederick Conyers Jr. and giving him a (second) chance to prove himself.
Good luck, Freddie Jr.!
Fred L. Barschdorf, Pittsfield
