Letter: Curious about origin of giant local moth

Curious about origin of giant local moth

To the editor:

The luna moth — if that's what it is — does not appear to have a history stateside anywhere. Yet, we spotted it twice recently, on May 29 in Becket and on June 3 in Pittsfield. The moth appears to be four inches long and likewise wide, light green, with a pleasant mien.

The May picture — taken from inside — shows its underside while it was sitting on our screen in Becket. The June picture — taken in the Knesset Israel parking lot — showing its top, was shot outdoors without any screen interference. Both were taken with my iPhone.

Has anyone else seen this apparently harmless giant bug, or know anything about it?

Bernd Brecher, Becket
