Letter: Don't judge all gun owners by the actions of a few

Don't pass judgement on all gun owners

To the editor:

I just finished reading the Dec. 23 editorial "Muslim efforts to fight fear, prejudice." Simply stated, it says that we should not judge all Muslims by the actions of a few religious Islamic terrorists, a sentiment I totally agree with. But why, when it comes to the issue of gun ownership are we told that all gun owners should be judged by the actions of the same few Islamic fanatics? Even President Obama broadcasts the evils of gun ownership without addressing the real problem of escalating terrorism in the world and here at home.

Perhaps the president's need to blame gun owners is because to do otherwise would force him to admit the truth; his decision with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to reset foreign policies has led us to this low point in world affairs.

The Eagle is quick to print commentary about the evils of guns and their owners. The latest was Dorothy van den Honert's op-ed piece of Dec. 17 where she shows her true misunderstanding of the issue and blames all gun owners for the shootings in San Bernadino, an act carried out by two Muslim terrorists, one who was not even a US citizen. Does Dorothy think that the 85 million gun owners in this country actually condone such actions?

And what about The Eagle? The editorial on Muslim efforts states that mosques will have open houses to educate Americans about their religion. Have any of the writers who contribute to The Eagle ever taken the time to educate themselves about guns and attend one of the local sportsmen's club meetings or events? These clubs are always open to newcomers and you don't need a special open house to get in.

The Eagle's editorial theme lately has been that all gun owners are fearful macho men. I wonder how that makes my wife feel? Yes, even she has her License to Carry LTC). Do you realize that the fastest growing segment of our population taking gun training, classes and applying for gun licenses are women? Did you know that there is a shooting league that competes here in Berkshire County that is just women? So much for the macho-man theory.

So the next time you're walking down the aisle of the supermarket, dining at your favorite restaurant, at the movies, shopping for new clothes or just walking at the bike trail, look around. That nice woman that just smiled at you, guess what? It's not President Obama or Hillary Clinton that will save you, it's her. Before the police can arrive and offer help, she will be the one to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Never give up the rights granted by the First and Second Amendments. They are just part of what makes America exceptional and they are why so many people want to come to this great country.

Paul Murphy, Pittsfield
