Extraordinary season for Lenox baseball team

To the editor:

Congratulations to the Lenox High School baseball team for winning its first Western Mass. baseball championship in 45 years.

Perseverance is the first word that comes to mind when summing up the Millionaire's 2016 campaign. They play a very competitive Berkshire County schedule and had that "never say die" attitude in playing the game. Coach Kevin Downer and staff, along with the athletes on the squad, should be extremely proud of their accomplishments.

I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Downer when he was umpiring high school softball in the late 1990s when my daughter, Erica, was playing for Taconic. I knew right away what he brought to the table while working with young athletes. He has a tremendous demeanor and approach with the kids. This is a direct reflection on how his players respond to him. As long as Coach Downer is leading the Millionaires, they will be a successful baseball team.

Also, I take my hat off to all the other Berkshire County baseball teams this year. It was exciting to read and follow all the 2016 news. Keep up the good work!

Fred L. Barschdorf, Pittsfield
