Letter: Extraordinary work of Berkshire Nursing Families
Extraordinary work of Nursing Families
To the editor:
I want to bring awareness to the great work that is being done by a local non-profit organization. Berkshire Nursing Families provides lactation consultation, classes, groups, in-home visits and around-the-clock support via phone, email, text and Facebook.
These services come at no charge to families. Pump rentals and supplies are available at a very reasonable cost. Given the short- and long-term benefits of breast-feeding for both the baby and mother, it is a public health issue that needs to be acknowledged and promoted.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breast-feeding for the infant's first six months of life. I recently gave birth to a healthy baby girl, and even with good health and my desire to breast-feed, it came with its difficulties. With the continued lactation support and weekly groups with other moms and babies, I have been successful.
I also want to say thank you, to the passionate, supportive, and knowledgeable staff at BNF, particularly Debbie, as well as Rebecca and Erica. Your hard work and dedication to the families of Berkshire County does not go unnoticed. Thank you, also, to the many donors who make this work possible.
