Letter: First woman candidate had local connection

First woman candidate had local connection

To the editor:

I read with great interest the Sunday, Sept. 18, Associated Press story about Victoria Claflin Woodhull, the first woman presidential candidate in the U.S. What the AP story failed to mention, however, was that Ms. Woodhull's father and ancestors were born and raised in Berkshire County — Sandisfield, to be exact.

This local connection is detailed in Ron Bernard's wonderful book: "Sandisfield Then and Now." It just goes to prove what local historians have joked about for years — everything important in history is linked to the Berkshires!
