Letter: Forcing an educational race to bottom
To the editor of THE EAGLE:
I am writing to thank The Eagle for the Edward Udel opinion page column of March 5, "State mandates are hurting schools." Please consider covering the growing growing lack of confidence many parents have in Common Core implementation and the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) backlash by parents for more articles.
Common Core standards are lower than what Massachusetts already had in place, they are copyrighted and unchangeable, and they take local control of education away from states and districts. The cost of curriculum changes, teacher training, hardware and software upgrades and maintenance for computer-based testing via PARCC and the increased administrative oversight now required to comply with the teacher evaluation process will decimate our school budgets which are already stretched to the limit.
An investigation into the history of how the common core state standards were developed and pushed though Washington by lobbyists for corporate interests is alarming, anti-democratic, and really boils down to poor teaching practice being mandated by the destructive federal programs called Race to the Top.
