Gardner ideal choice for Williamstown board

To the editor:

Once in a while, the ideal candidate steps forward to serve on a community committee, someone with the right education and professional experience, the enthusiasm to take on difficult issues, the depth and breadth of knowledge, and the commitment to get the job done. This year, that candidate in Williamstown is Sarah Gardner for the Planning Board.

She's got the right education as she has studied public administration and political science. Her professional experience includes the New Jersey Office of State Planning (brownfield re-development), and the City University of New York (urban policy researcher). And she has taught planning at Williams College for years.

She has the breadth of knowledge required, having initiated and participated in many studies: rezoning Cable Mills, redeveloping the Photec site, developing the Williamstown-North Adams bike path. Over the past 17 years, she has guided Williams students through exploring planning questions in town.

She has the dedication and commitment. If there is a community board she hasn't served on, I can't find it — Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, Williamstown Master Plan Committee, Conservation Committee, Community Preservation Committee, Agricultural Commission, Farmers Market Committee, Berkshire Grown, Hoosic River Watershed Association, and the state Environmental Trust among others.

The planning board plays two roles: preparation of plans and studies relevant to our future, such as land use, housing, recreation, conservation and business development, and then reviewing and proposing zoning bylaw amendments. Just the kind of thing Sarah excels at!

Sarah knows that sustainable development enables us to preserve and enhance our natural environment. We can't have one without the other, and she will strive to ensure a strong future for our town.

I've worked with Sarah at Williams, teaching and mentoring students, and we have served together on committees at Williams and in town. I'm always confident that when Sarah is in the room, we are going to get good work done. Let's make sure Sarah continues to work for us and support her bid for the Planning Board.

Stephanie Boyd, Williamstown
