Letter: Get involved with Fresh Air Fund
To the editor of THE EAGLE:
Has your New Year’s resolution gone by the wayside? If so, consider making a new commitment to volunteer with the Fresh Air Fund.
Begun in 1877, the program celebrates its 137th year this summer by providing inner city children from New York City, ages 6-18, with the opportunity to create new friendships and experience the joys of a relaxing week of summer vacation beyond the confines of city life.
For some, New York City can represent a wonderful weekend getaway filled with fabulous cultural excursions, but for disadvantaged children growing up in the city, it can be a dangerous place with few enriching opportunities. In contrast, the Berkshires represent an ideal place with cultural activities, rolling hills, farms, and a night sky filled with stars.
As the area Fund representative, I encourage you to get involved. You can offer the difference between spending a week on hot city cement with limited opportunities or the joy of swimming and splashing around in a cool, clean pool or lake and picnicking on soft green grass. Your assistance can have a lasting and positive impact and make a measurable difference in the future of a child. This is a way to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 6-13.
Please consider volunteering your time by hosting, escorting or interviewing families. Your help is always needed. Please contact me at (413)-528-6701 or the Fresh Air Fund at 1-800-367-0003. For more information, visit www.freshair.org
