Get to know Pittsfield's men and women in blue

To the editor:

I was born and raised in Pittsfield. I returned after college to pursue my goal of becoming a police officer. When Kim Bertelli and I were appointed to the Pittsfield Police Department in 1983, we began our decades-long careers with the organization.

After serving as the DARE officer for many years, Kim was named the first female detective in the department, where she still serves.

I spent most of my career with the department in the uniform division, as a patrol officer, shift supervisor or shift commander. Through the civil service process, I was promoted first to sergeant, then to lieutenant. I retired several years ago from the position of midnight shift commander. Through the years, I was the drug unit and night detectives supervisor, day and evening shifts commander. I was recognized by the commonwealth of Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women as a Massachusetts Unsung Heroine of 2011.

There are currently eight women serving as Pittsfield police officers, performing any and all of the duties required of all police officers. They, along with their male counterparts, are the backbone of the department. They, too, have served conscientiously and honorably for decades.

Therefore, I am writing to express my disgust that in 2016, The Berkshire Eagle has the mindlessness to headline its article about the Pittsfield Police Department's Community Police Academy "Get to know your boys in blue" (Eagle, August 29).

Perhaps, if The Berkshire Eagle staff had made an effort to get to know the members of the department, that inept headline would not have been constructed.

Katherine M. O'Brien, Pittsfield
