Letter: Good points made on military draft
To the editor of THE EAGLE:
As a draftee (1956 to 1958) I read Edward Udel’s July 7 op-ed piece "Rethinking the draft" with interest. I think he’s right that we would be less likely to jump into unnecessary military adventures if congressmen’s children were part of the fighting force.
Furthermore, as a draftee, I know from direct experience that officers, up to the highest rank, are just people like the rest of us and not infallible heroes. And finally, Mr. Udel should check his discharge document. It better be "honorable" and not "honorary" as printed in The Eagle.
