Grateful to farmers who support Question 3
To the editor:
I couldn't agree more with the Oct. 13 oped column "Responsible farmers support Question 3" by Anne Hanchett of Plainfield.
Agriculture has a significant impact on animals, our health and the environment, and I'm so grateful to farmers like Ms. Hanchett who support common sense reforms like Question 3. This measure would simply ensure that farm animals are given enough space to stand up, turn around and extend their limbs. It's hard to imagine anything more basic, but many animals used by large pork and egg corporations are confined in ultra-restrictive cages.
Polling shows that Massachusetts voters strongly support Question 3, both to prevent animal cruelty and to protect food safety. Extensive evidence shows that caging animals increases the prevalence of dangerous bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli. That's why more than 100 Massachusetts farmers, including Ms. Hanchett, have endorsed Question 3.
Passing this measure would benefit humans and animals, from the Berkshires to Boston.
