Letter: Help Co/Act do its good work

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

We recently became involved in an organization called Co/ Act (Community Organization for Action). Co/Act is a non-profit 501c organization, dedicated to resolving our community’s unmet needs -- unemployment and homelessness.

Co/Act is located in the First United Methodist Church, 55 Fenn Street, Pittsfield. The services offered there are food, counseling, showers, access to the Internet, free phone and mail services. The Work Force program matches competent workers with people who are looking for help with cleaning, yard work, painting, computer help and so on.

Other services are affordable housing, and the Food Net program which distributed 20,000 pounds of organic produce over the last two years. This food is delivered to 11 sites which feed the homeless and unemployed.

The most recent program is addressing the growing issue of homeless women, teens and children. Right now, many teen-age girls are homeless in Pittsfield. They are sleeping in cars or someone’s couch. We would like to bring attention to the critical need for housing. Donations are needed. Fund-raising events are being planned -- dinners, shows and a Silent Auction in October.

If you would like to volunteer or donate, call or write Paul Deslauriers, at the Pearl Street Center, 55 Fenn Street, (413) 232-7888, email: Paul@Co/ Act.org.
