Letter: Incubator businesses would help downtown Lenox
Incubator businesses would boost Lenox
To the editor:
Downtown Lenox has too many empty stores. What if the chamber and the merchants group could cajole building owners to offer ridiculously low rents, enough to cover utilities, this summer to start-up businesses that would like to try out their concepts? Unless landlords have prospective renters with lease in hand, the stores will remain empty during the top season.
"Outrageous! Unfair!," current shopkeepers would cry. Of course they are right, but increased foot traffic would benefit everyone, including restaurants. Would a business rather be the only one in a building with three blank storefronts?
Suppose eight stores were filled? Imagine the curiosity factor. The chamber could feature one incubator a week all summer to attract locals from around the county, plus tourists. Could be a win-win solution.
