Letter: Looking down on President Putin

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

In my younger years I was 5 feet 6 inches in height, one inch shorter than Vladimir Putin. Today I got this image flash in my mind of Putin in a room where everyone there was towering over him by a foot. This could likely happen.

The president of Ukraine is 6 feet, 4 inches as is John Kerry. President Obama is 6 feet 1 inch and Michelle Obama is an inch off six feet. Their 13-year-old daughter Malia is nearly as tall as her mother. Joe Biden is 6 feet and Defense Sec. Chuck Hagel is 6 feet 2 inches. This is "a lot of tall" when you are only 5 feet 7 inches even if you do represent the largest country in the world. This would have to feel uncomfortable if not menacing no matter what country you represent.

Despite experts who claim that the taller man wins in most contests, this may not apply when choosing a world leader. Out of a list of 57 world leaders past and present, 39 were of normal or average height if not shorter. Napoleon and Winston Churchill were each an inch shorter than Putin. Stalin was 5 feet 5 inches and Hitler was 5 feet 8 inches. Most presidents are of average height even though George Washington was 6 feet 2 inches and nine other recent presidents were about 6 feet or well over. Lincoln and LBJ were 6 feet 4 inches, James Madison was 5 feet 4 inches.

In our last election Mitt Romney stood on the podium at 6 feet 2 inches, one inch above Obama. By expert standards he should have won. But no, height didn’t seem to count. Hillary Clinton is 5 feet 7 inches, Chris Christie is 5 feet 11 inches and Jeb Bush is 6 feet 3 inches. Height or no height, we have an interesting election coming up.
