Letter: Military leaders don't make policy

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

On your editorial page May 29 you have a political cartoon by Danziger. It depicts three generals debating what the US armed forces are to do when Afghanistan is done.

I would like to believe that your editorial board has some basic understanding of U.S. government and how our military is organized and to who directs it. Most high school students will tell you that our military takes orders and direction from the president through the secretary of defense They do not make policy. When in the past they tried to make policy they were dismissed. Remember when President Truman fired Gen. MacArthur. Obviously Mr. Danziger and The Eagle have forgotten this.

When you publish such trash, people believe you. Is that what you desire? Maybe it is good that we have planners at the Pentagon considering any future possibilities so we would be better prepared.
