Letter: More to artist than Mom, apple pie

Posted

To the editor of THE EAGLE:

The contretemps over the new Rockwell biography introduces again the curious matter in American culture of institutionalized prudery. The mere suggestion that the sainted Norman might have had at least a mental life beyond Mom and apple pie is a scandal.

Just to put the homophobic mind at rest, I suggest a peek at a cover called "Homecoming G.I.," in which a young soldier, returning from the wars, is being greeted effusively by family and friends whilst around the corner of the house a shy, buxom lassie, hands behind her back and bust pressed forward, suggests that the young man’s homecoming will be very special indeed.

Golly, to think Rockwell might have had a special interest in boys is almost as shocking as the impossible suggestion that the kindly parish priest might have been pulling their knickers down.
