Letter: No excuse to skip our national anthem
No excuse to skip our national anthem
To the editor:
I recently attended the Wahconah vs. Monument football game at Monument Mountain Regional High School. The announcer stated "There is no band here tonight, so no national anthem" and the ball game started.
I sat down with a pit in my stomach that I haven't been able to shake it since. I took my 12-year-old son down to Washington DC last summer. We visited the National Museum of American History and viewed the flag that inspired "The Star-Spangled Banner." A flag that is so important that it is in an ongoing conservation program. I remember telling my son, every time you hear our national anthem, I want you to remember this flag and everything it represents.
The decision to skip our national anthem simply because the band was absent is puzzling and completely unacceptable to me. I can't be the only one.
