Letter: No need for another self-storage facility
No need for another self-storage facility To the editor:
To the editor:
The people of Pittsfield deserve more than another self-storage facility at the gateway to our city. It will create only a handful of jobs, if that, and will turn the Pittsfield plaza property, which could be a beautiful piece of land, into a large, brown blob.
Another aspect is that the self-storage business is aimed squarely at low-income residents. People who find themselves moving often and with no place to keep their belongings.
After months of paying the monthly rates they may find they can no longer afford the payments. They walk away losing items they have no room for and have their credit rating altered forever in the aftermath.
We have enough self-storage units. We should demand that the owners actually invest in the piece of land they made such great promises about.
