Letter: Roe decision gave women a choice
To the editor of THE EAGLE:
There will always be a heated debate on both sides of the abortion issue as evidenced by all the recent letters in the Berkshire Eagle. I find it interesting how many of them are from men. I realize it takes two to cause an unwanted pregnancy but it is men who can, and many times do, walk away from any emotional or financial support of the woman, leaving her the responsibility to bear and raise the child alone or make the heartbreaking, sometimes necessary, decision to give it up.
There are many valid reasons to terminate a pregnancy (the least of which is rape) and I'm sure none of them are ever made lightly. Past history has proven that women who can't obtain a safe legal abortion will often choose an illegal one and we all know where that can lead.
I, for one, am glad that Roe v. Wade has given women the choice over their body and life.
